The UK Safety Camera Network is a decentralized, ethical, and community-driven CCTV project.
We install free, high-quality outdoor cameras on buildings across the UK to help deter crime, reduce antisocial behavior, and improve public safety — without invading personal privacy.
Building owners or occupiers agrees to host a camera and provide power, internet, and a mounting point.
We visit, assess the site, do a legal data protection review (DPIA), and install the camera — all free of charge.
Each camera is securely connected to our network with a private login for the host and public transparency tools.
We focus on disused, abandoned, and at-risk buildings that overlook public areas where crime and antisocial behavior are more likely — such as outside nightclubs, transport hubs, parks, or high streets.
Our aim isn’t to watch buildings — it’s to watch over communities.
Every camera is backed by a detailed Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA).
We:
Use privacy masking for private windows or gardens
Follow UK GDPR and CCTV Code of Practice
Store data for a maximum of 31 days
Don’t monitor 24/7 — footage is only accessed when needed
Log every access or use of footage
Each camera gets a public Transparency Page.
It includes:
A link to the live feed (viewer only, no downloads)
The full DPIA for that specific camera
A secure form to request footage (e.g. crime victim, DSAR)
Just scan the QR code on any camera sign to access it.
We are not a surveillance network.
We only retain footage for incident response, and access is controlled, audited, and lawful.
Rights like erasure or rectification do not apply in the usual way to CCTV, but we still handle requests with care and ensure footage is accurate and fair. If footage is misleading (e.g. unclear angle), we annotate the file with context — we don't delete the truth.
We don’t use live facial recognition.
If needed (e.g. for a shoplifter or suspect), we can use facial detection to match a known face image to recorded footage — but this only happens after a request and never triggers alerts or tracking.
This system has no live alerts, no automated actions, and no public matching.
You submit a request with a location and time.
We ask for verified government ID.
If your identity matches the person in the footage, we redact others and provide the clip, and delete your ID from our systems.
If not, we reject the request and delete your ID from our system.
Your data is protected, and so is everyone else's.
Hosting a camera helps your community.
You get:
Free supply, setup & maintenance
Added security around your building
Full legal compliance — no liability
Your own secure mobile app login
Support if footage is needed for an incident
All you need to provide is power + internet. We do the rest.
We install cameras where they’re most needed.
If no local buildings offer space, we can’t cover that area.
The more hosts that join, the more coverage we get — and the safer the streets become.
These cameras protect people. And if you ever feel unsafe, you can deliberately walk in their view for reassurance. Our goal is a network that watches over people, not watches people.
